Seismologist Gioacchino Giuliani predicted a large quake near L'Aquila was on its way. Vans with loudspeakers drove around the town all March long; telling people to evacuate their houses.
The Mayor got mad (shades of "Jaws") and Giuliani was reported to the police for "spreading alarm" and was forced to remove his findings from the Internet.
The Head of the National Geophysics Institute dismissed Giuliani's forecasts.
To make matters worse; Italy's Civil Protection Agency had a meeting of "The Major Risks Committee" ... got a bunch of scientists together in L'Aquila on March 31st .... and had them say "there was nothing to worry about" and told the Media that it was impossible to predict earthquakes".
All this even though the first tremors were being felt in mid-January and continued at regular intervals... according to Reuters.

THUS FAR: Thousands are still missing. Structures both ancient/historic and modern are destroyed. Whole towns have disappeared. The number of dead is still mounting up.
1500 injured and more than 150 dead.
